"Gravity" is primarily filmed in 65mm IMAX format to "give [the audience] a more visceral feel for the movie." In May 2012, "Variety", stated that Cuarón would shoot the film primarily in 70mm IMAX format. However, on March 27, 2013, Warner Bros. announced that Cuarón would use 65mm cameras exclusively. This decision was made after Warner Bros' investment partners exerted pressure on the studio to keep IMAX's full frame rate of 2.39:1 for a majority of the film which required a longer lens than their current lens system. Cuarón stated the following regarding the decision: "For me, 65mm is a much more intimate and immediate format." "Gravity" was announced as a part of the 70mm initiative by Warner Bros. with an announcement date of July 24, 2012. In April 2013, Cuarón mentioned that he had no idea how long the film would take to complete as they were refining their photography techniques from making television commercials to cinema films, stating that they were refining their techniques and allowing for a lot of improvisation during filming. He also claimed that he originally wanted to shoot in IMAX, but was unable to obtain clearance from NASA for this film's portrayal of outer space. cfa1e77820
