Embedded systems (also referred to as embedded computing) are computers that are designed to run within another device, such as a vehicle or an appliance. They integrate closely with the devices they control and can be programmed using several different languages like C, Python and also Forth. Embedded systems combine the software and hardware of their parent device into a single system on a single chip or multiple chips. This allows for little or no software to be written separately for the embedded system. Embedded systems are very different from computers used for other purposes. Embedded systems run a specific program, called firmware, to accomplish a particular task. This is different from the operating system used in most personal computers that provide a general-purpose environment to run programs, and may even be used in multiple devices or for multiple uses by running the same program. The idea of embedding a system within another device may also be considered when designing digital logic circuits. In this case the 'device' being embedded could be another digital logic circuit such as an adder or multiplier. A digital logic circuit being used to produce integer values, these are often referred to as microcontrollers. An embedded system is one that needs minimal or no software. Software is generally required in general purpose computers for operations that are not considered to be within the scope of the computer's function. Hardware in an embedded system may be used directly in another device, e.g., an analog-to-digital converter chip may be used to produce a digital signal, which is then used externally in a computer or other device for processing. Some embedded systems are designed solely for use within another device. For example, a set of speakers may be embedded in a television or radio. An embedded system may be considered to be more complex than a small microcontroller. Embedded systems which control and manage other devices can also be considered to include microcontroller based systems, even though the former is not necessarily the case (e.g., embedded and standalone GPS units and car computers). Embedded systems can be found in many parts of society: military, automotive, medical, industrial automation, consumer electronics, etc. Embedded systems are used broadly in all industries either as part of larger devices or as stand-alone products that carry out certain functions automatically. There are a variety of reasons that an application may require a computer to be in a small form factor. These include: The following items are not included in the definition of an embedded system, but may also be considered to be examples of connected devices: Embedded systems have been used for control purposes at least since the 1960s. Control systems have been used in many different applications such as controlling spacecraft, missiles and aircraft. In the 1980s there were at least two competing technologies for controlling large spacecraft from Earth, either by remote control or automatically by autonomous monitoring and control strategies. cfa1e77820
